New Market Place, Great Yarmouth
Value - £3.8m | Client - Great Yarmouth Borough Council
An exciting redevelopment project of the historic market to improve existing facilities and provide new units under an architecturally-striking canopy.
We were engaged to provide geoenvironmental, civil and structural engineering services on the £3.8m redevelopment project of the historic covered market. The significant investment has seen the market facilities significantly improved in the heart of the Market Place, with new units under a stunning timber canopy.
The main element of our work involved the development of the design of the large timber glulam roof frame, supporting foundations and below ground drainage system. The new structure features a continuous roof, with panels of slatted glazing to create a brighter and welcoming environment inside, helping to support the market itself and the wider regeneration plans for the town centre.
The outdated market canopy dated back to 1992 and was beyond its designed lifespan, while the utilities were complex and congested. The market had continually adapted over the years but was ready for investment and redevelopment. Inside the new market there is a wider walkway, plus covered open spaces which can be used for a range of purposes, including potentially siting further units, space for two-day traders, pop-up events, performances and exhibitions. There is also refurbished trader toilets and a new market office.
Improving the Market Place was a key project in the wider Town Centre Masterplan to revitalise the town centre as a community hub and destination for the future.
