Thomas Graham Library, Strathblane
Value - £1m | Client - Fleming Building
A new carbon neutral village library funded by the local community.
The new library, described as a ‘remarkable’ project by Stirling Council, is a 211 sqm building, funded entirely through personal and charitable donations raising £985,000.
Forming a community hub for Strathblane and the adjoining villages, the building provides social, recreational and educational services, and replaces an old library which was housed in a portable cabin. Featuring glulam, the structure and the roof of the new community building are timber-framed.
Designed by Thomas Robinson Architects, the building is carbon-neutral thanks to its renewable energy system, including roof-mounted solar panels, an air-source heat pump, and battery and thermal storage facilities.
Opening its doors to the local community in spring 2023, this is the first community-owned public library built in Scotland in living memory.
The scheme won the Community Benefit category at the RICS Scotland Awards 2024.
