Woodside Library, Glasgow
Value - £2.3m | Client - City Building Glasgow
The sensitive refurbishment of one of Glasgow’s oldest libraries, funded by Glasgow City Council.
First opened in 1905, following a report recommending the establishment of additional district libraries and reading rooms in the city and surrounding area.
The building has recently undergone significant refurbishment and restoration to modernise the space, whilst maintaining its original character.
The main objectives of the scheme were to address multiple areas of water ingress, increase the number of sanitary facilities, improve fire escape routes within the building, repair the stonework and roof lights and maximise the potential use of the building.
Many of the building’s original features have been retained, along with some that had been hidden behind false ceilings. The glazed dome and ventilation system over the main reading room was removed. The dome was replaced with a new aluminium system. The ventilation structure above the dome was refurbished and reinstalled along with the feature chandelier.
Re-opening in March 2022, the library is now home to a flexible, vibrant community space.
