Kirkby Leisure Centre, Knowsley

Client - Knowsley MBC

A flagship decarbonisation scheme for Knowsley Council.

We were appointed on a ‘green energy’ transformation project for Kirkby Leisure Centre via Knowsley Council’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).

This appointment followed the successful design of several previous schemes via the Council’s PSDS: Huyton Library, River Alt Resource Centre and Court Hey over the last three years.

The key aim for the Leisure Centre was to significantly reduce the building's carbon emissions, as part of its ambitious target of reducing emissions from its buildings and services to net zero by 2040.

Having received £3.15m from the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Fund and a £200,000 contribution from Knowsley Council, the scheme saw the installation of 11 low-carbon air source heat pumps, replacing its gas boilers, along with over 700 roof-mounted solar panels.

We were engaged to design the air source heat pump system, serving the heating and domestic hot water. The estimated CO2 savings over the system lifetime for the new heating and hot water system is 6266 tonnes over 15 years, which equates to driving 37,000,000km in a diesel car.

We will continue collaborating with the Council to monitor the system's performance and report the results in due course.
