Armfield Academy, Blackpool

Value - £12m | Client - Conlon Construction

The Armfield Academy in Blackpool forms a new single-storey primary school and a new two to three-storey secondary school with associated car parking and recreational grounds.

Our appointment included the provision of multi-disciplinary engineering design services, including detailed site investigations and flood risk assessments.

The primary school and secondary school are separated by a road running through the middle of the site. The secondary school area involved the demolition of listed buildings to make way for a new three-storey teaching block.

The secondary school involved the structural remodelling and refurbishment of a technology block, sports hall with changing facilities, and the provision of MUGA pitches.

The primary school involved the structural remodelling and refurbishment of existing teaching facilities, to also include a new extension to provide kitchen and dining facilities. A historic building on the site, also a wall of historic importance, were both brought back into a structurally healthy state. Work also included reinstatement and making good works to existing artificially surfaced sports pitches.

Procured under the ESFA Framework, the Academy was named after Jimmy Armfield the famous Blackpool and England footballer who was a former pupil of the school.

Testimonial:

“Armfield Academy is another successful education scheme which we have had the pleasure of working on with Clancy Consulting; a trusted partner based on a relationship that extends over many years.

We choose to work with Clancy because they share the same values and ethos as ourselves, and we recognise their expertise as first-class consultants across a range of engineering design services. The Clancy team also fully understands the benefits of true collaborative working which enables positive communication throughout the course of the project. Both technical knowledge and innovative solutions across their geoenvironmental, C&S plus MEP design aspects ensured a truly integrated design.

Clancy understood the budget restraints and challenges that were put upon the design team and worked together with us to help achieve our goals, even when challenged, with a mutually beneficial outcome for all those involved. As a result, we were able to deliver this complex project three months ahead of programme.

A great experience all-round and we hope to continue the working relationship on future schemes.”
