A coffee with... Shea Beesley for National Apprenticeship Week

Article posted on: 7 February 2023

It's National Apprenticeship Week and once again we're shining a spotlight on our fabulous apprentices!

We caught up with Shea Beesley, Civil Engineering Technician based in our Liverpool office to find out about why he chose the apprenticeship route, his greatest achievements so far, and a project he was particularly thrilled to have been involved with…

Please tell us about your career with Clancy and your current role.

I joined Clancy in the summer of 2019 after completing my first year in sixth form. It has been three and a half years since, and I have enjoyed every minute working here. I am currently an engineering technician within the Liverpool office in which I assist the engineers on a day-to-day basis. I am currently in my fourth and final year at Wigan and Leigh College where I will go on to study at degree level in September.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

I chose the apprenticeship route due to the fact I wanted to earn whilst I learn, and also gain practical and relevant work experience that I can apply to my future job role and professional studies, which I would not be able to do otherwise. Clancy has also kindly offered to sponsor me through my studies too, which was a major influence on my decision to pursue an apprenticeship at Clancy!

What would you say to students considering an apprenticeship?

I would 100% recommend considering the apprenticeship route. Pursuing an apprenticeship will ultimately give you a head start in the industry through gaining experience whilst studying for professional qualifications, giving you the upper hand when it comes to workplace knowledge of the industry. You’re also earning a wage too which is one of the many benefits of an apprenticeship that you might not get otherwise.

What project have you enjoyed working on recently, and why?

Very recently, I was involved in some work for the new Everton stadium down at Bramley Moore Docks. As an Everton fan, I had to get involved! It was the design work for some secondary elements of the overall structure. It was an incredible opportunity that I could not pass down, and we were very fortunate to get a site visit out of it too!

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement so far has definitely been passing my end point assessment to gain my engineering technician status. Through this, I gained the professional technician membership for the Institution of Civil Engineers. It was a very stressful process in which I failed at my first attempt. To then to find out I had passed after all the hard work and effort; it was very overwhelming!

What's it like working at Clancy?

Honestly, working at Clancy these past few years has been amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better working and learning environment, and to see how far I’ve come from my first ever day, I don’t think it would be the same if I worked elsewhere. The opportunities provided have set me up to progress my career both professionally and academically, to which I am really grateful.  I really wouldn’t change a thing.
