Riverside & Bridge Street Development, Stafford

We were appointed by project manager Paragon LLP on behalf of developer, LXB Retail Properties, to provide engineering consultancy services on three sites in Stafford – at Riverside, Bridge Street and Kingsmead, with a total project value of £70m.

The Riverside site included a new 18,580m2 retail development at Riverside with anchor stores M&S and Primark, together with a new multi-storey car park and retail units at Bridge Street side. The scheme also includes leisure facilities including a cinema.

As the name suggests, the Riverside and Bridge Street sites are adjacent to the River Sow and as such flood risk mitigation measures were incorporated into the scheme. Both sites are linked with a new footbridge across the river which we designed the foundations.

The structural solutions included a mixture of steelwork and reinforced concrete on driven piled foundations. The covered mall walkway incorporated an Etfe roof covering and most of the units had steel fibre reinforced floor slabs.

The design team worked collaboratively with the steel fabricators to provide a fully coordinated model for the client.

This project has been highly commended for the Best Commercial Project Award at the LABC West Midlands Building Excellence Awards 2017.
