Aeronautical Training Facility at Ayr College, Ayrshire
We provided civil and structural engineering design services for the construction of new hanger, workshops, classrooms and administration offices, totalling 1150m2, adjacent to the existing college.
The Aeronautical Training Facility is a bespoke building designed to facilitates hands on learning and cutting edge technology to enhance skills in the sector for the long term. This can only reinforce links with key local employers.
The building design pivots around a light-weight aircraft wing that flows over the central atrium and emphasises the dynamic nature of the building. Although aesthetically powerful the wing also serves a more practical purpose as it allows the use of a fully passive ventilation system.
A key issue in the development of the facility was the requirement to obtain BREEAM Excellent status in order to secure funds from the Scottish Funding Council. This was achieved through regular meetings from the earliest of days with the client and design team. Clancy’s contribution included the specification of recycled materials, and a Traffic Statement review which led to the incorporation of cycle friendly measures.
A fully integrated SUDS system was designed not only for the building but for the existing car park; which lessened any pollution potential to the nearby watercourse.
