Clancy’s Brentwood College Project Opened by Smiths Music Legend
The former Brentwood School was too small to deal with the ever growing demands of schooling children with special needs. The school had been seeking funds to build a new school for almost a decade and funding was finally granted in 2014. The project was tendered via the North West Construction Hub Framework Agreement.
The main objective of the project was to build a school capable of accommodating 150 pupils, the former school only being able to cater for 80 pupils. The project had to be designed to meet the very specific needs and requirements of special needs pupils. The school had a desire to include a hydrotherapy pool, external amphitheatre, cycle track, and food tech room into the building and external works design. The school also wanted the building to be designed as a college, able to cater for a wider age range of pupils to 19 plus.
Clancy’s geoenvironmental team were involved early on in the project in carrying out site investigations and associated site investigation reporting. A Clancy civil/structural team were then involved in the design and detail of the building foundations, drainage, external works, and superstructure. The superstructure is of steel framed construction with masonry walling. A specialist pool designer was engaged to design and install a £1M hydrotherapy pool and Clancy were engaged in an overseeing role in checking the pool design calculations and carrying out site inspections relating to the pool construction. Clancy were also engaged as Planning Supervisor ensuring the project met with the requirements of the Construction Design Management Regulations.
At all stages of the project Clancy developed scheme design solutions and presented these to the design team and main contractor for commercial and programme review prior to engaging in the detailed design process.
There are very few schools in the area able to cater for special needs pupils and the new Brentwood School is now deemed the benchmark in terms of its design and construction.
