Engineering and construction careers have long been considered a male dominated industry and as part of International Women’s Day we look at how, as a firm, we are tackling the gender divide within the industry.
Clancy Consulting have a longstanding history of proactively working to bridge the gap on gender diversity within the workplace. As an organisation we have teamed up with contractors, clients, industry bodies and education authorities across the engineering and construction industry to tackle the stigma around women in engineering and construction, embarking on international campaigns and education road shows.
Data recently sourced from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that women currently make up 11.2% of the construction workforce – the lowest level on record in the past three years. This figure, along with the analysis conducted by the Royal Academy of Engineering which suggests the industry needs to see more than a million new engineers and technicians in place by 2020, highlights the importance in addressing gender diversity within the industry. The Institution of Engineering and Technology highlights only 9% of engineers in the UK are women and only 6% are registered engineers and technicians.
The engineering and construction industry offers an exceptionally wide variety of stimulating and creative career opportunities available to both men and women. Gaining a qualification in engineering provides an individual with the skillset to embark on a career with worldwide reach where they can be involved with projects that positively impact the world in which we live.
Mike Powers, Director at Clancy Consulting has been a mentor on the Women in Brunel Engineering and Computing (WiBEC) programme since its inception, being invited back following successfully mentoring a student in the last academic year. The programme helps female graduates and undergraduates to gain a better understanding of the career paths and opportunities available to help them. Mike has shared his knowledge, experience and expertise and has helped his mentees to set personal goals to assist developing a competitive advantage in the graduate job market. Mike commented:
“I am passionate about equality across the industry and strongly believe this should be highlighted, which is why I enjoy acting as a mentor and hope I am seen as a trusted and influential supporter for the WiBEC programme by my peers. The role gives me hope that the tide is turning and that as an industry we are becoming more diverse and encouraging people with the right skill sets and mentality to engineering. I find the role interesting as each mentee requires different inputs form a mentor and my role has been substantially different for both of my mentees to date.”
Whilst the challenge is ongoing, and one we proactively address, we are pleased to recognise that currently 28% of our workforce are female, an increase for the company from this time last year when it was 25%. We are also delighted to have received recognition at the NCE Top 100 Companies Awards 2017 where we were ranked within the top 50 and one of the highest ranked SMEs! We are also pleased to have once again been listed in the Building Good Employers Guide as one of the top 50 firms in the industry.
By helping to reduce the gender gap in our workforce we recognise how we can, in turn, have a positive impact on individuals and the industry as a whole ensuring we are able to continue to drive positive change and development of the built environment to better support the society in which we live and offering both men and women the opportunity to embark on a stimulating and multidimensional career.
