Barkip Biogas Facility, North Ayrshire

This new facility was being built on a former landfill site at Barkip, North Ayrshire, and is capable of producing around 2.5MW of electricity from around 75,000 tonnes of waste – diverting 37,000 tonnes of food waste from landfill each year.

The new facility,operated by Zebec Biogas. was constructed by Luddon Construction on behalf of Scottish & Southern Energy Generation Limited on a William Tracey Group site. Clancy were responsible for the provision of full civil and structural engineering design services.

The plant is currently the largest anaerobic digestion plant in the UK, and represents Zero Waste Scotland’s largest investment to date in this technology.
